The Intelligent Transportation Systems ITS: What, Why, and How course provides an introduction to fundamental ITS information. It explains how ITS technologies have been used to address transportation challenges since the 1940s and goes on to present the broader context in which ITS applications are developed, deployed, and operated. It also offers insights into the future directions in which ITS is expected to develop.
The goal of this course is to provide those responsible for planning, designing, and managing programs, projects, or plans that include ITS with 1. an understanding of the capabilities and benefits of ITS; 2. the processes required to plan, procure, and implement ITS; 3. the tasks necessary to successfully manage ongoing ITS operations and maintenance needs; and 4. workforce needs to sustain ITS.

Update Audience: The target audience for the ITS: What, Why, and How WBT includes a wide variety of transportation professionals involved in managing or delivering transportation programs, projects, or plans. This training is best suited to entry-level to mid-level managers from state highway agencies, local agencies, regional transportation agencies, Tribal Governments, consultant firms, and FHWA field offices whose work includes or could include the use of ITS technologies. In addition to entry-level staff to mid-level managers, a mix of other professionals will benefit from the course including higher-level management and decision makers whose job necessitates knowledge and awareness of ITS applications, regulations, funding, and operations and maintenance considerations as well as an understanding of how ITS impacts programs, project, or plans. Entry level staff--even those who may not understand the transportation planning process or how a project is developed--could benefit from this course since context will be provided throughout to engage and connect real-world examples to recommended practice. University level (undergraduate and graduate) students interested in pursuing a transportation degree with a focus on ITS and emerging technologies will benefit from this course.
